With a first-class education system, affordable cost of living and friendly people, it is no wonder Australia attracts its fair share of international students.  

Prior to studying in Australia, however, individuals must ensure that the course in which they are interested in is a registered course. Additionally, the correct visa will be required in order to study within Australia. An individual, who is interested in partaking in a course that is no longer than three months, may travel to Australia and study while on a working holiday, or visitor’s visa. 

If the course of interest is longer than three months, however, it is necessary to, first, obtain the correct student visa from the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship. Along with opening the doors to a quality education, obtaining an Australian student visa also has additional advantages.

Individuals in Australia on a student visa:

• Are entitled to study for a period longer than three months
• Are eligible to work part-time
• Are entitled to subsidized student health coverage

Additionally, students are entitled to apply to work full-time during breaks in the school year.  Family members who are interested in joining the student in Australia may also be eligible to obtain a visa; full details can be obtained from the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

Prior to obtaining a student visa one must first be accepted into a full-time Australian educational institution, and have received their Confirmation of Enrollment. 

Furthermore, all individuals applying for a student visa will be assessed depending on one’s country of origin/nationality. Individuals with an Assessment Level 1 are eligible to apply online. 

In order to best determine which Assessment Level one is subject to it is advisable to contact one’s local Australian Government office overseas.  Contacting one’s local Australian Government office overseas will allow one to obtain the correct information about how to go about making one’s application, as well as what documents will be required in order to make the application.

Obtaining the correct student visa will allow one to stay, and study, in Australia for the entire length of one’s course. Additionally, one will be allowed multiple entries, while on the visa, into Australia. Should one wish to extend one’s study period, an additional application will have to be lodged at that time.
